About Dfinitive.com
Here at Dfinitive.com we aim to offer you a unique experience, taking in the best elements of a directory site, a search engine and a book-marking site, but with a twist. It’s the first site to use a mix of editors, a expert from each category, and social editing to produce a list of the very best, definitive sites for each category.
The idea for Dfinitive.com arose because finding the best sites using search engines, directories, or book-marking sites is time consuming and frustrating. Why? Well the internet is a very big place, so analyzing the billions of web pages and prioritizing them is a problematic task at best. Google has employed some of the finest brains in the world, but its results can still be hit or miss. So much so that the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales has announced that he is launching a community-driven "Google-killer" search engine,
Wikia. At the moment there are three main ways of finding relevant websites; search engines, web directories and book-marking sites. Rather than taking each search facility in isolation, we at Dfinitive.com will attempt to take out the plus points and overcome the flaws in each method. Some of the flaws include:
- Search engines (Google, MSN, Yahoo) – Are vulnerable to manipulation, have little human checking to ensure the quality of sites, and some very good sites can't be found because they are not optimized for search engines. Newer sites have also suffered due to Google Trustrank which hides away some of the newer (and often better) sites until they build up their online “trust”.
- Directories (Dmoz, etc) – Can be useful, but can be out of date. New sites take a long time to get listed. Also few directories proactively find the best websites, they usually only review sites which are submitted.
- Bookmarking sites (del.icio.us, etc.) - While these sites can be very useful, they are open to massive abuse which can cast a shadow over their better aspects. A lack of structure can often lead to some of the better sites being difficult to find.
After much research and testing, we believe that we have come up with a new offering which takes in all of the better aspects of the above methods. Something that allows you to interact, pass on comments to fellow internet users, and basically “regulate” the offering which we are presenting to you.
We began our journey to Dfinitive.com after reading Michael Martinez’s comments about what he calls “Elite Directories”. We thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if there was a site which only listed the very best websites available”?
We have also been watching the growth of Web 2.0 and social sites. Wikipedia is a fantastic resource, even if it’s not perfect. So we thought it made sense to add a social element to Dfinitive. That would ensure the site is constantly updated and has a broad reach.
So after much research we have launched, Dfinitive.com. The aim of Dfinitive is to produce a single page of the very best sites for each category. It will be creating by utilizing “collective intelligence” to produce the content, and human editors will ensure that the rankings are not manipulated. Finally, an expert in the field will ensure only quality sites are listed. Once a site is added, any visitor can vote for or against it. If a site gets a lot of negative votes it will be removed from the list, and the more positive votes it gets, the higher up the list it goes, simple! So make your vote count, and remember it is the users who will dictate which sites stay on the listing, and which are removed.
We need to ensure we are bringing the best service to you, so let us now what you think of the site. How we can improve it, what are we doing right, where we are going wrong, and any other comments which you may have.
If you have any comments or suggestions please let us know.
Have a good look around, we hope you enjoy the site.
