My biggest blogging mistake is not updating often enough

Posted by Julian Paling on March 27th, 2007

When a friend of mine Daniel Scocco of Dailyblogtips.com and the resident expert for Dfinitive’s blogging category said he was starting a project about blogging mistakes it got me thinking… what mistakes have I made? I haven’t been blogging for long but I have to say that I have already made the most fundamental blogging mistake “not updating the blog often enough”.

The mistake
I have only been blogging since the 15th January 2007 and started with the best intensions, within a day the second post was live, great I thought. But then other jobs got in the way and before I knew it nearly six weeks has passed, oops. As John Chow said in his blog:

It never fails. Somebody sets up a new blog and is all excited about it. We see a furry of posts for the first few days, maybe even a few weeks, and then the number of posts starts to go down until the blog is hardly updated at all. Nothing kills a blog faster than lack of updates. If you are going to blog, then pick a posting frequency and stick to it. Whether it’s one post per week or 10 posts per day, make a commitment to keep your blog updated. A non-updated blog is a dead blog.

What I did to correct the mistake
After realising that I had let six weeks pass I said to myself “I really need to get this sorted out”. So within a few hours the next post was ready, I was really please with myself. The post was a great, even if I say so myself, and it certainly obtained some great links. The post was about SEO gurus and their celebrity look-a-likes, it was only a bit of fun but it certainly attracted links from some of the top blogs in the online marketing space -bruceclay.com, problogger.net, shoemoney.com, and stuntdubl.com.

Conclusion
I don’t think I’m even going to be the type of blogger to post three times a day, every day of the week, I’m more of a quality rather quantity blogger. But I have promised myself and my readers to blog at least twice a week from now on. :)
